General information about the Aztec

The Piper PA-23 Aztec is a twin-engine light aircraft of the US company Piper Aircraft Corporation. The machine had its first flight on 1 October 1958. In the period from 1959 to 1981 4,930 pieces were produced. The aircraft is characterized by its good-natured flight characteristics and a very short take-off distance. The pattern of the model was first developed under the name Piper PA-27 Aztec. In October 1957, the company received approval from the aviation authority to rename the model to PA-23. This allowed the existing type approval to continue to be used. Only the factory numbers differ. The machine is powered by two right-handed six-cylinder engines. It has a hydraulically retractable landing gear, as well as hydraulic flaps. The first series still had a short bow and in the front area the luggage load. Only with the B-series, the fuselage was extended to provide more space for luggage. In addition, the number of seats has been changed at the Aztec. The C-series offered petrol injection engines. Turbochargers were optionally available as well. In the other series only the instruments of avionics were changed. The American Navy bought 20 copies of the Aztec. Until the late 1980s, the model was used mainly military, a private use was rather rare here.

The machine provides space for a pilot. In addition, up to five passengers can be carried. The Aztec is 9.51 meters long and 3.14 meters high. It has a wingspan of 11.30 meters and a wing area of 19.30 square meters. The empty weight is 1,500 kilograms and the maximum take-off mass is 2,360 kilograms. The Aztec can reach a speed of up to 340 kilometers per hour. The maximal service ceiling touches at 6,100 meters and the tank has a range of 1,900 kilometers. The Aztec is powered by two piston engines of the type Lycoming O-320-B1A, each with 119 kilowatts of power.
